In reflections upon my practice and the practicalities of my previously intended project I have come to several conclusions. Although the kind of photography proposed through ‘Fawley’ are of interest to myself the scope and potential for growth with this project feels limited and challenging. In the mean time, family commitments and teaching commitments restrict my ability to visit as frequently and freely as would be needed to the area of Fawley in order to get the images worthy of the project.
It is for these reasons I have decided to develop a new project which still stems from elements of my pre-existing practice through the use of still life photography. It has always been my interest in my photographic practice to create images which depict the impacts made by humans on our surroundings and the influences we have daily on the world around us. This has previously been explored through the photographing of the discarded plates and packaging of peoples meals at cafes, restaurants and service stations.
Through Module 3 it is my intention to gain the advise and guidance of my tutors and to develop the idea through visual and contextual research. This research must explore the origins of still life as a practice. Through the Dutch Golden Age painters to Fox Talbots photograms of still objects and onto the works of Irving Penn, Edward Weston and Tom Baril. These are, of course, only starting points and the work will develop onwards from there.
I intend to continue to photograph table tops left at restaurants, cafes and service stations as well as to create my own still life explorations at home.
