With a growing idea of creating a book I first moved through thoughts of a concertina piece.
This was largely due to the practicalities of exhibiting the work for more to be able to view it. This rapidly grew into a desire to create a more substantiated body of work bound in an artist book. My selection of images for the books content are shown below. The edit was selected to best display the strongest of the quite vast array of images available.
Always deciding on the use of a black cover front and back I wanted to experiment with something a bit extra and bespoke for the work. After several attempts with a laser cutter to cut in great detail image 035B I decided to cut out the etched portions by hand creating a single window through the front cover which would show onto a white first page. A video of the laser cutting process can be seen below.
The content of the book was devised and composed using InDesign. A program I’m very familiar with and perfect for the role.
Following the black ‘sky’ images I wanted to present a folding segment which would open out to reveal a large print. The concept is similar to the previously discussed large scale image the size of one of the exhibiting walls. The folding nature of the image is akin to that of a map which has been also previously discussed and links with the topography aspect of the concept.
As has been a favourite method of mine over the years and in the book experiments from this project I have opted for a Japanese bond using a waxed white cotton.
To close this post I show below a video ‘reading through’ the book which forms part of my FMP final article. This is then followed by the spreads of the book presented in the order of their appearance throughout the book. The front page with its laser cut window is presented as a two tone shape for show purposes.
