Responding to Anton Giulio Bragaglia

When considering the work of Anton Giulio Bragaglia my practice had to move towards something I’ve never really been too interested in or had confidence with, self portraiture. Although I could have used my kids and family to model for the images I wanted to use this opportunity to create images in a way that put me outside of my comfort zone. As a recap, the work of Anton Giulio Bragaglia is shown in the first gallery.

One element that makes the work of Anton Giulio Bragaglia so remarkable is the use of film to capture the images. The process would have been incredibly experimental and the margin of error could have been great. It probably took several rolls of film to get the desired results. I have the luxury of shooting digitally and the next gallery shows the contact sheet for this shoot. I used a strobe and a great background.

Following the contact sheet I set about editing the images. Due to the process the experimentation was in the production rather than the post-production. As the strobe was a multicolour one I decided to leave in the colour images but to also edit them into black and white to make them more fitting with Anton Giulio Bragaglias original work. The next gallery is of the colour images while the gallery after that are the black and white edits.

The following gallery looks at the images but in the black and white treatment to make them more fitting with the work of Anton Giulio Bragaglia.
