Module 4 – Week 6 – Independent Reflection

Think about:

  • Whether photographs should resonate with the space / place in which they are viewed.

Not always essential to the body of work but often critical when considering ones audience as a whole.  An exhibition intended to be viewed by young people would not, for instance, be exhibited in a pub or bar!  If the work permits it then it could enhance it.  A body of work from my BA was later exhibited only a hundred or so metres from where it had been made in a structure of the same relevance as the work itself

  • Whether the choice of space and audience reduces your authorship of the work.

This is possible, if the means and method of exhibition are not possible in a chosen location then it could be necessary to tailor how you display your work to fit the facility.  If this does not compromise the works message then I believe it is not entirely bad.

  • How you could get the audience to contribute to, rather than participate in, experiencing your work.

A possible method of this would be to run a screen with a live stream of a hashtag for that show or work.  This can then be added to by people adding their own contributions using that tag.  They are contributing while not exclusively participating in the work itself.

In your CRJ, write a short summary about:

  • Your experience of the week’s activities and feedback received.

This weeks activities have made me start to consider potential forms my practice could take.  These include experiments with light boxes and projections, maybe both.  More development needed here.
This weeks third webinar was great!  Some great feedback and a real sense of moving in the right direction with my practice.  This has helped my general mental state which has been fragile of late.

  • Any reconsiderations to the core methodology of your project.

Possible considerations in the direction work is progressing in.  I still feel on a stable path though and need to progress mover over coming weeks with plans for constructing my own “light stage” for use when producing images.

  • Moving forward, the forms your project / photographs could potentially take.

As mentioned briefly above, considerations now leaning towards the use of light boxes as well as projections.  I’m most attracted to projections due to their versatility and ability to be projected in any space you can get a power supply for.
