Module 4 – Week 4 – Independent Reflection

Think about:

• The relationship between you and your chosen apparatus.

Possibly rather pretentiously I have often thought of my camera as an extension of myself. With a camera in my hand that is so familiar to me that its operation becomes second nature to me.

I have always felt very comfortable and sound in the technical operation of cameras and so my relationship between myself and the apparatus I use has been one of hybridity.

• At which point responsibility becomes a consideration in your approach.

Responsibility is there from before the release of the shutter. In the making of the scene and then the production of the images, I have the responsibility.

• Whether another photographer can do what you do, and whether you could be more original.

There’s always room for more originality and a large problem comes from too much looking at the work others. Far more prudent to ‘think with a camera’ in the development of work and ideas. It’s nearly always possible to make an artist transcription so yes it is possible for another photographer to do what I do.

• How you are not just another “button-pusher”.

An interesting question. I have always craved wider acclaim for my work but that work has not always found its way to its right audience. Whether that’s due to where I live or how I disseminate my work I am not sure of. I feel I am not another “button-pusher” because I aspire for more for my practice and name than just to blend in.

In your CRJ, write a short summary about:

• Your experience of the week’s activities and any feedback received.

This week has been a great week on the programme. The 24 task was well received and has lead my to consider additional ways of broadening my practice through the use of flatbed scanners. The second webinar of the course was very successful and my work was well received and great opportunities for advancement given. The lectures on Crowdsourcing made me consider how it functions in my practice through the sourcing of items and settings for my image making.

• Any reconsiderations to the core methodology of your project.

Not necessarily for the core of the projects methodology but certainly for how it goes as time progresses.

• The forms your project / photographs could potentially take moving forward.

I feel my considerations for the way I make images will broaden slightly at this stage before focussing in again. Over the coming weeks I intend to exploit this and can’t wait for what that journey will bring.
