Think about:
- Strategies employed by other practitioners of particular interest to you.
Although he does not work with ‘still life’ as a subject I have always been blown away by the sheer scale of the work produced by Ed Burtynsky. The wall sized prints compliment the scale and drama of the scenes they depict. Further to this the huge light boxes of the work of Jeff Wall is also of interest to me.
- Challenges met / overcome by other practitioners and any compromises they had to make.
I will again use the example of Burtynsky as mentioned above. The major challenge here was to do the subject matter of his work justice. Gaining elevation through helicopters, hot air balloons and, more recently, drones have taken his photography to whole new dimensions.
- Differences between tools, methods and methodologies.
Tools and methods are more of a practical nature, how we use equipment. The outcome or the way that equipment is used and the resulting images are what evolves that towards being a methodology. A way of working. A set of rules one sets themselves to work to.
- Various forms in which practice can be communicated and shared.
The advent of the digital era means that there are more ways to show and display work than ever before. No longer do we need to restrict ourselves to the traditional gallery space. Anywhere and everywhere can become a platform for the communication of photography.
In your CRJ, write a short summary about:
- What your current practice is.
At this point I could define my current practice as ‘still life’ but I am excited to develop that over the course of this module.
- What you did during the week, feedback received and how you will respond to that.
During this week I most enjoyed the forum where we displayed our intermodule experimentation. So much talent and so much great photography on show! The feedback I received on what I made was great and I found the process highly rewarding. The work of others shows me clearly that I need to up my game in terms of methods of conveying photographic works.
- How you would describe your methodology.
At this point, ‘in need of work’. I feel this is the module to really start defining what I do and to develop that set of rules for the making of images.
- The forms your project / photographs could take moving forward.
In the intermodule work I had the books I designed physically printed as zines. I’d like to explore these more and I would like to further my ‘still life’ photography but try and break away from that description of the work.
