Bobby Doherty

I discovered the work of Bobby Doherty by accident when researching for the classroom. These punchy, high clarity over sharpened images build still life constructions that are often simple but sometimes highly complex.

The combining of multiple elements, often in post production, make for effective and sometimes erotic imagery. The presence of decay and death is clear through the often use of insects and wilting moulding fruit.

In this first gallery set below, Doherty has used a largely white background with the subject matter often in a state of decay furthering the momento mori narrative. While little is written about Dohertys work in his website, the use of his still life studio in product photography is clear and concise.

This second set of images have been separated due to their use of more colourful and vibrant backgrounds. These appear to often be applied using chromakey backgrounds to give a surreal feel to the image like the subject matter is floating within the frame. The high contrast, high saturation and over sharpening of images remains.

Through this module I would like to experiment with bright and obscure still life settings, the use of chromakey backgrounds, decaying fruit and over saturation in the editing process.
