Shoot 4 – Contact Sheet

For this shoot I set out to start trying to replicate some of the imagery of Karl Blossfeldt and to do this I wanted to use film. Using 5×4″ black and white as well as 120 black and white to produce images of thistles on a grey background. The lighting used was continuous tungsten.

The results initially are disappointing. The roll of 120 failed due to a developing error while the 5×4 sheets appear to be fogged. This is probably due to the lack of a lens hood on the 5×4 camera to avoid overkill from the light as well as exposure errors. The scans below are bracketed images which, when combined with HDR, produced disappointing results. When approaching individual images the success was greater. A selection of images can be seen here. I want to return to thistles with a grey background, hopefully before the end of the module.
