Shoot 3 – Selected Images

These selected images come from this recent shoot and study religious symbolism found in still life art and herein photography. Bread and wine are commonly found as representations of Christs body and blood in Christian Holy communion. This paired with the flagon and the grapes upon a silver platter add to the display. Many of the images feature the negative space caused by photographing with such lighting. This experiment could be furthered by finding a way of shooting the arrangements from a high angle looking down on them.

In the other arrangement I used bread and a fish. These represent the ‘feeding of the five thousand’ made known in the bible where Jesus fed as many people as the name suggests using only, allegedly, five loaves and two fish. There are not as many objects in my images but they a start and a nod towards this symbolism.

Below is an image where I experimented with alternative backgrounds in an attempt to copy the work of Caravaggio or Claesz. I feel this example has been less successful but I would like to find alternatives which may work for this function.

In future shoots I would like to continue my experiments using symbolism within the image as well as continuing to experiment with the lighting and compositional styles of the fine art research I have conducted. Being relatively new to still life photography I feel these explorations are important to the projects ongoing development.
