Images were shot digitally and metered using different methods. A combination of TTL metering on the camera and hand-held readings using a Sekonic Flashmate. The Sekonic readings were from a combination of incidental using the dome and reflective using the exposed sensor.
Using candles was a fun way of lighting my subject of a singular skull with black background. This did result in difficulties with white balance. The image to the right was using automatic white balance with a very warm glow from the candles. The image to the left was using a custom setting of 2550 Kelvin. This came the closest to a clean white and created a superb exposure. These images used a four second exposure which was nicely balanced with a superb depth of black but I felt it could be better.

AWB 4 seconds f8 ISO 400
The image below was of the exposure time being sped up by two stops to one second with the 2550 K white balance. The result is really satisfying and gives a foundation to build upon the technique.
