How has the relationship between photography, science and technology affected how we attribute ideas around knowledge and truth to the photographic image?
Still today many see the photograph as a truth of what happened or confirmation that a thing did happen. It is still felt that the camera does not lie. And while it is true that the camera, a non-human object, cannot lie, the user most certainly can use it to bend the truth. Most users of a camera are oblivious to its journey to being in their hand. The decades (nearly two centuries worth) of research and development into the device which sits in their pocket, ready to snap what they choose at a moments notice.
What aspects of technology have had the most profound impact upon the development of photography?
By far the two aspects of technology which have had the most profound impact upon photography are the mobile internet and the camera phone. As mentioned in a previous post, mobile phone cameras have enabled the downfall of entire governments and the bringing into touch the desires of law enforcement to use whatever means they wish to handle a situation. Mobile internet now enabling me to take a photograph and have it visible to a potential audience running through the millions to the billions of individuals within a few short seconds.
